Here is the way I see it...

Abbadon sent his minion, the fortuneteller, to corrupt Shiro's mind. After having been touched by Abbadon, Shiro kill's the Emporer then releases the Jade Wind, a power given to him by Abbadon's corruption, apon Cantha.

Now here is the key, Abbadon, being the God of Secrets, knew this act would earn Shiro the punishment of being an Envoy. Shiro was then given the knowledge he needed, by Abbadon, to make the constructs, the plage, and return to life in order to cause more caos in the mortal world. This was all done to prepare for Nightfall and his return. Lucky for the world that Abbadon's plan's did not include US.

Thats just my theory/way of looking at it. Some of it is in the lore, the rest is assumptions based on Abbadon being God of Secrets.

If I recall the cutscene correctly, Shiro was behind them.

I always thought of it as being a use of Meditation of the Reaper - because the party can't see him (except for the minions...) they don't have the chance to deal enough damage to break it before they all die.

Or it could be that he simply didn't have space for it on his skillbar, instead having to replace it with skills like "create portal" and "use blood of a member of the Imperial family to return to life". Killing 18 level 20 characters in one gesture regardless of defenses HAS to be an elite, after all...

Well, Togo does say "Ah, the celestial test. Mhenlo and I know it well." when the envoys mention it. Also neither of them joins you for the mission when you become Weh no Su.

Togo is one of the most respected heroes in Cantha.

I'm pretty sure he's Weh no Su.

Weh No Su has nothing to do with us getting killed by Shiro.Togo is obviously Weh No Su since he is the legendary Ritualist of Cantha. We are not so at that point we would not be able to interact or see Shiro. Like Taala said Shiro was lurking behind us when he killed us so Togo would not seen him anyway.

Remember the Envoys brought us back after Shiro left and they began the debt. Chances are since we are pretty fighting for them aswell as Cantha they gave us some defence to Shiros Envoy power.

"Your most recent encounter with Shiro sent you to a premature death, but the envoys intervened"

And after awhile one of the Envoys does say something like "We give back to you your newly departed souls" in which he does something causing enchantment rings to appear around us for a few seconds. This could be why he cannot finish us off so easy.
